Johanna van Stratum, a mother of five children, living in a small community in Honeymoon Valley in the Far North applied for a loan to extend their somewhat cramped family dwelling.
Their home relies on solar photovoltaics for lighting and a woodstove for all their other energy needs (cooking, hot water and heating). The family has an organic garden, a composting toilet and grey water treatment system to minimise the impact on their sensitive bush environment.
