The Long Creek Company was initially formed by a group of friends who were keen to purchase a block of land bordering the Long Creek river, inland from Kaikoura.
They applied to Prometheus for a loan to that end and we approved that principally because of their commitment to preserving and protecting the large areas of regenerating native bush on the property.
Ten kilometres inland from Kaikoura township, the Long Creek blok comprises 327 hectares of plateaus, hill country and regenerating bush which "finger" up the Long Creek and Hapuka Rivers.
""Once you have a look at the property nothing else compares with it"" says Lloyd Brorwn.
Lloyd had been given permission to visit and camp on the property whenever he wished and often did so with friends. Gradually a group formed that developed the aim of buying the land if it ever came on the market.
When it did in 1997 the group formed a company with eight shareholders and approached Prometheus for a loan to help them purchase the block. The rest is now history. There has been significant tree-planting and other activity on the property in the past decade and Long Creek is the longest-standing native-forest regeneration and sustainable lifestyle project on Prometheus' books.
