Springs Junction Idyll

Springs Junction Idyll

In 2005 we approved a modest loan extension to Darren and Lindy Peters to enable them to build a small cabin on land they owned in the head waters of the Mawhero/Grey river.

The cabin is intended as  short-stay accomodation when they visit their land block near Springs Junction and was to be built with untreated timbers.  The land itself, an 11 hectare block, was initially bought in 1996 with a loan from Prometheus as Lindy, a school teacher, and Darren, a DoC Protection Officer, both wanted to preserve the property from development.

The land is mostly unmodified native bush and spagnum moss swamp.  The surrounding mountains and valley slopes are all protected forest park where kakariki, kaka, kea and New Zealand robin are common.

Given the reliability with which Darren and Lindy had repaid their initial loan to purchase the property together with their ongoing conservation aims we were pleased to approve their further application.
